Our Speech-Language Pathologist (or more widely known as Speech Therapist)

Our school Speech Therapist is part of the school team and as such is involved in assisting students and their families. Our Speech Therapist is based at the school for three days per week – Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. This time is used to support students within the Special School as well as the Early Childhood Development Program.
Education Queensland provides speech-language therapy services for students with special needs in communication or with eating and drinking difficulties. They have specialised knowledge of:
- speech, voice and fluency
- language and communication strategies
- social interaction skills
- eating, drinking and swallowing.
Education Queesland speech-language pathologists:
- work as members of the education team to determine the educational needs of students with special needs in communication or with eating and drinking difficulties
- assist in developing and delivering programs
- help the education team to adjust the communication demands of the curriculum
- train teachers or teacher aides in ways they can support the child
consult with and provide resources to school staff, parents and the school community
- liaise with other agencies.
Students at Mount Ommaney Special School and our Early Childhood Development Program are referred to the Speech-Language Pathologist by their class teacher. These referrals are discussed with school staff and prioritised based on the referrals provided as well as identified school needs.
