Lions Children of Courage

On Saturday afternoon, November 14th, a group of exceptional young people, their families, friends, community members and school staff met together at Mt Ommaney Special School for a unique celebration.

Since 2005, the Jindalee Lions Club have organised a special annual event where the individual achievements of nominated local children and young people are celebrated. These CHILDREN of COURAGE awards recognise that for some young people, the journey through life is more complicated and offers far more challenges than would usually be expected.

For many of these young people, they and their families have endured countless medical procedures, developing important relationships with doctors, nurses, therapists and chaplains. They may have experienced significant interruptions to their schooling and felt the impact on social and community life.

Despite this, each recipient has shown qualities such as tenacity and patience, creativity, resourcefulness, a sense of humour and much, much more. Each of them, in their own, unique way, have genuinely triumphed over the particular difficulties that have been a part of their life and development.

This year, five wonderful children received their CHILDREN of COURAGE award at an afternoon tea attended by our local State member, the Hon. Julie Attwood and our local councillor, Matthew Burke, along with local club members of Lions Australia.

Two students from Mt Ommaney Special School were among the recipients. Briana and Josh came with their proud parents and siblings, to share something of their life story and achievements with the proud and attentive audience.

Mt Ommaney Special School has been delighted to support this initiative of Lions Australia and in particular, values the relationship we have with our local club in Jindalee. We sincerely offer our congratulations to each young person and their family. Well done!

Resource Centre Update

Well, no-one could possibly say that our new Resource Centre looks like anything other than a building now. It is starting to look quite imposing, as it 'hovers' on its rise over the lower part of the school.

While it's quite obvious that the construction of the external walls is now finished, we have only had a couple of tantalising glimpses as to what's been going on inside.

Again, thanks to the willingness of one of the construction team, we have a photo of the internal layout to share with you. The walls are recognisable as 'walls' and the ceilings are also up. Word is that the first coat of internal paint has also been applied.

The view seen below is from the Resource Collection Storage Area, looking back towards the Multi-Media and Seminar rooms.

We have recently had quite a few meetings to decide what will go into these spaces...can we afford a compactus? What about an interactive whiteboard? How many desks and chairs will we need? Do we want boxes, trolleys or shelves as book display units? Should we have a built in printing bench/work area or will we have a big table?

There are lots of decisions to be made, so that we fit the building out appropriately for our MOSS and ECDP students, for now and for the years ahead...all within budget of course! As always, keep watching this space.
